ZF begins supplying Electric Park Brake System for new Indian EV platform

Key Highlights

  • ZF starts production of its Electric Park Brake (EPB) system in India for a newly launched EV by a leading passenger car OEM
  • EPB enhances safety, fuel efficiency, and supports advanced vehicle functions like emergency braking and brake pad wear sensing
  • Marks ZF’s first EPB integration in India, aligning with its “Make in India for India and the World” strategy

ZF Group has officially kicked off production of its Electric Park Brake (EPB) system in India, marking a major milestone in its local e-mobility strategy. The system has been integrated into a recently launched all-electric vehicle from a leading Indian passenger car manufacturer, although the OEM’s name remains under wraps.

This is ZF’s first-ever EPB start of production (SOP) for the Indian passenger vehicle market. The move not only strengthens ZF’s footprint in India but also signals a shift toward electrification of mechanical systems in mainstream vehicles.

What makes ZF’s EPB System special?

The EPB system replaces traditional mechanical handbrakes with a button-operated electronic solution, offering several advantages:

  • Low drag and NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) for better fuel economy and comfort
  • Two-wheel anti-lock emergency stops for enhanced safety
  • Dynamic actuation and brake pad wear sensing, reducing maintenance hassles
  • Modular architecture, scalable across passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, and trucks

The system is fully integrated into the vehicle’s braking architecture, enabling advanced functions like remote parking, autonomous fallback, and software-defined control.

Local production, global standards

ZF’s EPB system is being manufactured in India, reinforcing its commitment to the “Make in India for India and the World” philosophy. The company plans to supply several thousand units over the next few years, supporting the growing demand for safe and smart EVs in the country.

India’s EV market is evolving rapidly, and ZF’s EPB system adds a layer of safety, efficiency, and tech sophistication to the mix. With over 250 million EPB calipers already on roads globally, ZF brings proven expertise to a segment that’s hungry for innovation.

This launch also opens doors for future collaborations with Indian OEMs looking to integrate software-defined braking systems, especially as autonomous and connected vehicle technologies gain traction.
