Goodbye to the Volkswagen Touareg SUV, but why?

Volkswagen’s decision to discontinue the Touareg SUV has come out of the blue. However, the brand has been working on this decision for quite some time now. The main reason to discontinue the Touareg is the shift of focus by Volkswagen’s top officials.

As per the online reports, the German carmaker will be focusing on developing more cost-effective and mass-market products that will have a wider appeal. Meanwhile, there will be no replacement for the Touareg SUV, which has ruled out the possibility of a new flagship SUV.

As of now, Volkswagen will continue selling the Touareg till 2026. It is in its sixth generation, and its global production will end next year after a total of 24 years of production. The Volkswagen Tayron, which was launched in 2023, will serve as the new flagship SUV of the brand, but not as a replacement car.

Volkswagen had the Touareg on sale in India till 2014. In fact, it was available with a V10 diesel engine that also powered the Audi Q7. Volkswagen had developed the Touareg along with the Porsche Cayenne in 2002.

Our say

The discontinuation of the Touareg will definitely hurt Volkswagen fans worldwide. The flagship SUV offered luxury, comfort, and performance at a relatively aggressive price tag when compared to its rivals like the Audi Q7, Mercedes-Benz GLS, and the BMW X7.
