Tesla Model Y L 6-seater: All details explained
Launched specifically for the Chinese EV market, the new Model Y L is based on the standard 5-seater Model Y. However, as its name suggests, it is a long-wheelbase version with more seating capacity and feature upgrades.
The biggest change on the Model Y L is the increased length of 179mm, which has enabled Tesla to equip it with a 2+2+2 captain seating layout on the inside. Due to the new dimensions, it has a longer roofline, a new rear quarter glass, and a new Model YYY badge on the rear.
Other design changes include the new 19-inch aerodynamic alloy wheels and a new Starlight Gold colour option. The rest of the car, including the width and the styling, remains unchanged compared to the standard 5-seater model.
On the inside, it gets a new 16-inch floating touchscreen with improved graphics. The second row seats get ventilation and heating, along with auto-folding central armrests. Meanwhile, the third-row seats only get the heating option. There are new AC vents mounted in the roof for better ventilation for the rear passengers.
Powering the Model Y L 6-seater is the 82kWh battery pack with an AWD system and long-range. It gets twin electric motors, each mounted on the front and rear axles, which cumulatively offer a CLTC-claimed range of 751 km. Moreover, it can sprint 0-100 km/h in 4.5 seconds, which is pretty quick for a car of its size.
The new Model Y L 6-seater is specifically made for the Chinese car market. However, the brand has not denied that it will launch it in the global markets in the future.
Our say
Tesla has been facing serious competition in the Chinese car market due to the new EV makers like Dongfeng and Xiaomi, which offer more powerful and efficient EVs at a lower price tag. The introduction of the new Model Y L is to save the sinking boat of the US-based EV maker in China, which has been sailing smoothly until now.
