Renault has recently revealed new products in India. However, the French carmaker seems not to be keen on revamping or updating its entry-level hatchback, the Kwid. Read below why.

Renault Kiwd: No update in sight?

Speaking to a media publication recently, Renault India’s top official has hinted at Kwid’s unprecedented future. The brand’s most affordable car seems to have no long future, and the reason looks like low sales.

While there was no official remark made regarding Kwid’s future, the brand is clear that Kwid does not need to be updated in India anytime soon. Kwid has been selling less than 1,000 units monthly, which is due to the low sales trend of hatchbacks.

It looks like compact and crossover SUVs like the Kiger itself have killed the affordable hatchback market. Moreover, the rising input costs of making small cars are increasing along with new government rules that push for safety features. Therefore, keeping the cost-benefit ratio remains a major struggle for every brand that makes affordable hatchbacks.

However, the brand recently introduced its Renault.Rethink strategy for India. As per it, the Triber facelift is the pivot for change, which is followed by the Kiger facelift and two new SUVs – the new-gen Duster and a Duster-based 7-seater model.

While the launch timelines for both of these SUVs are unknown, it is rumoured online that Renault will debut the new-gen Duster in India early next year. Even the test car has been spotted multiple times in and around Chennai.

Our say

In a harsh business like compact hatchback manufacturing, the cost-benefit ratio is everything. If the trend is dropping for such cars, it makes no sense to invest crores just to update a low-selling model. We think Renault is now thinking in the right direction.
