Next-gen Volkswagen Golf R to get 400 bhp?
As per a latest online report, Volkswagen is expected to feature the 2.5-litre, five-cylinder turbo-petrol engine from the Audi RS3 into its next-generation Golf R model.
The company has been working on the next-gen Golf R for some time now, and it is destined to become the last petrol-powered Golf R ever, before the company hits complete electrification by the end of this decade.
As far as the engine details are concerned, the 2.5-litre, five-cylinder engine makes a whopping 394 bhp and 480 Nm of peak power and torque on the Audi. However, it is expected that the Golf R will feature a re-tuned engine, which means power output could be well above the 400 bhp mark.
Now this is doable because earlier Audi had also introduced its RS3 Performance Edition that was limited to 300 units, with the same engine making 401 bhp and 500 Nm. As of now, the Golf R is powered by the 2.0-litre TSI engine producing 328 bhp and 400 Nm.
To accommodate the bigger engine and increased power, the engine bay, mechanicals like brakes, suspension, etc, will also undergo rework. Volkswagen will also rework the 7-speed DSG gearbox for quick performance.
As far as the design is concerned, the new-gen Golf-R will feature a reshaped front and rear with active aerodynamic panels, a new spoiler, a new diffuser, and a more aerodynamic body overall.
The new-gen Golf R will be revealed to the world next year. However, it will go on sale in 2027 while celebrating the 25th anniversary of the ‘R’ brand.
Our say
The Golf R is an established hot hatchback worldwide, which is fondly known for its handling and supercar-like performance. With the new-gen model, the company will elevate the thrill of driving a Golf R altogether.
