New Maruti Suzuki SUV to get multiple powertrains

As per the latest details, the unnamed Maruti mid-size SUV that is scheduled to debut next month will get multiple engine options, including petrol, CNG, and hybrid. These powertrains are similar to the Grand Vitara, which is also a car that is in the same segment in which the new SUV will debut.

Additionally, a few online rumours suggest that the SUV will get the underbody CNG tanks, which will be the first for any Suzuki car. This will be done to free space in the cargo area, which has been a downside of the Maruti CNG cars.

As far as the name of this SUV is concerned, it is being rumoured that the company has finalised ‘Victorious’. Meanwhile, the upcoming electric iteration of it, which is also called e Vitara internationally, will be launched with the ‘Escudo’ moniker.

So, why two SUVs in the same segment? While we do not have any exact answer for it, we can safely assume that Maruti wants to position its products in the premium segments, which are above Rs 20 lakh and more.

Our say

Maruti’s plan of expanding its SUV portfolio looks right, because the Creta has consistently been the best-selling car in India for the past few months. This shows that the mid-size SUV segment still has potential to expand with the new products, which the new SUV will target.
