Are the new KTM test bikes based on a stripped-down 790cc platform?

The recently surfaced spy shots of the two unnamed test motorcycles have come from Europe. Both of these KTM models are likely to be based on the same platform and a new parallel-twin engine.

While numerous reporting agencies and media publications are hinting at the new-gen 790cc platform, we suspect otherwise. It is because both of these test bikes are seen loaded with a single front disc brake, which is completely unusual for a 790cc parallel-twin platform.

However, there is a high probability that these bikes are based on a new platform that has been developed in India. A top KTM official had earlier confirmed that the brand is working on a new small capacity parallel-twin motor, which will find its way to India, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia.

By ‘small capacity’, the official did not mean that these would be sub-400cc bikes. We firmly believe that these are based on a stripped-down 790cc platform, which will result in a 400-500cc engine to compete with the rivals like CFMoto and BMW internationally.

While the confusion around these unnamed test mules prevails, KTM has not confirmed anything regarding any new parallel-twin engine being under development or not.

Our say

Ever since Bajaj rescued KTM before drowning in the stream of financial loss and mismanagement, the brand has taken a U-turn and started focusing on new low-cost and mass-segment bikes. It has recently introduced a new 160cc platform in India, which has replaced the 200cc models.
