Mercedes CLA defies expectations, forces production surge

Key Highlights

  • Mercedes CLA EV receives overwhelming demand, prompting a shift to three-shift production at Rastatt.
  • CLA 250+ and CLA 350 4MATIC variants offer up to 792 km range and AWD performance.
  • Hybrid-petrol model and CLA Shooting Brake to join the lineup later this year.

The new Mercedes CLA is doing what few sedans manage these days, that is selling like hot cakes. Just months after its global debut in March 2025, Mercedes-Benz has confirmed a production ramp-up at its Rastatt plant in Germany to meet surging demand.

Despite early skepticism online, the CLA EV is proving that buyers still want sleek, low-slung luxury cars—especially when they come with up to 792 km of range and a badge that still turns heads.

Variants and performance

The CLA EV is currently offered in two variants:

  • CLA 250+ EQ: 268 bhp, 335 Nm, 0–100 km/h in 6.7 seconds, up to 792 km range
  • CLA 350 4MATIC EQ: Dual-motor AWD, 349 bhp, 515 Nm, 0–100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, up to 771 km range

Both models are built on the MMA multi-drive platform, allowing for flexible powertrain options. A hybrid-petrol version is set to enter production later this year, featuring a 1.5L turbocharged engine with mild-hybrid tech.

Production strategy and expansion

To keep up with demand, Mercedes has added a third shift at Rastatt and plans to expand production to its Kecskemét plant in Hungary. The electric motors are sourced from Stuttgart-Untertürkheim, and the flexible production line is capable of scaling to hundreds of thousands of units annually.

The CLA Shooting Brake, a stylish compact wagon, will also join the lineup soon, further boosting output.

India launch confirmed

Mercedes showcased the CLA concept at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Expo, confirming that the model will be launched in India. Given its specs and positioning, expect it to slot above the EQA and below the EQE SUV in the brand’s electric portfolio. Once launched it will go head to head with the BMW i5.
