Maruti e Vitara to be called ‘e Escudo’ in India
A latest test mule of the upcoming Maruti e Vitara has created a stir among auto enthusiasts across India. While the test car spy images look identical to the earlier spottings, it is the nameplate badge on the boot that is raising eyebrows.
As we know, the e Vitara is Maruti Suzuki’s first-ever fully electric vehicle. It has already made its world debut in Europe, and its Indian launch has been scheduled for September 3.
However, opposite to the rumours, where it was earlier speculated that the Escudo nameplate is a different SUV, the e Escudo badge clarifies that it is nonetheless the e Vitara with a new name for the Indian market.
Suzuki already uses the e Vitara nameplate for the international market; hence, the brand might have decided to give it a distinctive image in India. Meanwhile, the rest of the car, apart from the badge, is similar to the international-spec e Vitara.
Maruti has scheduled the debut of the e Escudo on September 3 in India. Upon launch, it will become a direct rival to the Hyundai Creta Electric.
Our verdict
Maruti’s decision to rename the e Vitara to e Escudo in India is a smart one. The brand clearly wants to steer away from the monotonous branding of an international product, especially when it is an important one. More details will be revealed regarding the e Escudo in the coming days.
