Honda electric SUV cancelled, no future for EVs?
Honda has been planning to introduce a new range of electric cars from 2026, which is a major part of its EV expansion plans globally by 2030.
One such model was an unnamed large electric SUV, which was being designed for large families, and was designated to be launched in 2027. However, the brand has now cancelled development after considering the low sales and demand for the EVs.
Honda’s electric expansion plans are primarily dedicated to the US market, as it generates big profits for the Japanese carmaker. However, after witnessing the low demand for electric cars in the US and the hefty tax imposition by the Trump government, Honda has backed off a little bit.
Meanwhile, the brand is still reluctant to introduce its luxury flagship electric sedan and midsize SUV in the global market. Moreover, Honda has internally decided to cut the electric vehicle expansion investment and rather focus on its petrol-hybrid models, which accumulate better sales worldwide.
The brand plans to introduce 13 new hybrid models worldwide from 2027 to 2031, which are expected to generate a 120% revenue increase as compared to 2025.
Our verdict
The latest advancement in Honda’s electric car expansion plans looks subdued. The reason is simple – low demand, less interest in EVs, and high import taxes in the US. However, the hybrid cars will continue to improve and get launched worldwide, including India.
