JSW Sarbloh Motors, a subsidiary of JSW Defence, has announced a strategic joint venture with Tomcar USA to produce all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) in India. The partnership will focus on the Tomcar TX range, a platform known globally for its ruggedness and adaptability. Production is set to begin at JSW’s Chandigarh facility, with the first locally-assembled units expected by early 2026.
Strengthening India’s defence and industrial mobility
The joint venture aligns with India’s push for indigenous defence solutions. The Tomcar TX platform has already proven itself in military and industrial use worldwide. With payload capacities of up to 1,200 kg, modular configurations, and compatibility with hybrid or electric powertrains, the vehicle is positioned as a versatile tool for armed forces, police units, and sectors like mining, search and rescue, and border patrol.
The TX’s design allows rapid conversion from troop carrier to pickup truck or weaponized unit, making it suitable for diverse missions. Features such as full independent suspension, high ground clearance with skid plates, and readiness for 360° protection give it an edge in both combat and industrial scenarios.
A step towards self-reliance
JSW Defence has already been active in the mobility space through amphibious specialist vehicles supplied to the Indian Defence Forces. This new collaboration with Tomcar further expands its portfolio, adding a globally tested off-road platform to its lineup. For Tomcar, the deal strengthens its global footprint, particularly in right-hand-drive markets, while bringing its battle-tested vehicles into one of the largest defence markets in the world.
Competitors and market relevance
While India’s armed forces already employ ATVs from global and local suppliers, the JSW-Tomcar collaboration could provide a strong domestic alternative. Rivals like Polaris and other international ATV brands have operated in niche defence and adventure spaces, but local manufacturing and customization may give the JSW-Tomcar JV a cost and deployment advantage.
