JLR delays launch of Electric Vehicles amid market challenges

Key highlights

  • Range Rover Electric deliveries pushed to 2026; Jaguar EV production now slated for August 2026.
  • Extended testing and slower-than-expected EV demand cited as key reasons for the delay.
  • JLR faces global headwinds including US tariffs, sales dip, and internal restructuring.

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has officially delayed the launch of its highly anticipated Range Rover Electric and next-gen Jaguar EVs, citing the need for extended testing and a more favorable market window. Originally scheduled for late 2025, the Range Rover Electric will now begin deliveries in 2026, while the first Jaguar EV, dubbed Type 00 will enter production in August 2026, followed by a second model in December 2027.

The decision comes despite strong initial interest, with over 61,000 customers on the Range Rover Electric waitlist. JLR says the delay will allow it to fine-tune performance, quality, and customer experience for its first in-house electric vehicles.

Why the delay? Testing, tariffs, and timing

JLR’s EV rollout is facing a triple whammy:

  • Extended testing for its first directly manufactured electric models
  • Lower-than-expected EV demand, especially in the UK
  • Global trade disruptions, including a 15.1% drop in sales due to US tariff hikes and paused exports

The company has also launched a voluntary redundancy scheme for up to 500 managers in the UK, signaling cost-cutting efforts amid economic uncertainty.

What’s still coming and when?

Despite the delays, JLR remains committed to its electric roadmap:

  • Range Rover Electric: Dual-motor setup, 117 kWh battery, 500+ km range, 800V architecture, 350 kW fast charging
  • Jaguar Type 00: Premium electric GT, priced above £100,000, targeting younger luxury buyers
  • Range Rover Velar EV: Production expected in April 2026, though further delays are possible
  • Defender EV: Slated for early 2027

JLR says it will offer electric versions of all its luxury brands by 2030, with flexible architectures to adapt to market shifts.

Our thoughts

Rushing a Range Rover EV into showrooms just to meet a deadline would be a disservice to the badge. If the final product delivers the refinement, capability, and luxury we expect, the wait will be worth it.
