Key highlights
- Volkswagen offers up to INR 3 lakh off on the Tiguan R Line, including INR 2 lakh flat cash discount
- SUV launched at INR 49 lakh (ex-showroom) as a fully imported CBU
- Price drop follows lukewarm market response and stiff competition from feature-rich rivals
Volkswagen India has slashed prices on its flagship Tiguan R Line by a whopping INR 3 lakh just four months after launch. The move comes as a response to slow sales and market feedback that the SUV’s INR 49 lakh price tag didn’t quite match buyer expectations.
The discount includes a INR 2 lakh flat cash cut, with the remaining INR 1 lakh bundled as exchange bonuses and loyalty perks. The revised ex-showroom price now stands at INR 46 lakh, making the Tiguan R Line slightly more digestible for premium SUV buyers.
Why the sudden discount?
Let’s be honest, the Tiguan R Line had a tough crowd to please. Launched as a five-seater petrol-only CBU, it entered a segment dominated by diesel-powered seven-seaters with more aggressive pricing and broader feature sets. Despite its 2.0L TSI engine, 4MOTION AWD, and Level 2 ADAS, buyers weren’t convinced it offered enough bang for the buck.
The SUV’s lack of a third row and diesel option didn’t help either. Add to that the competition from the likes of Toyota Fortuner, Hyundai Tucson, and Skoda Kodiaq, and you’ve got a recipe for showroom tumbleweeds.
What you still get
To be fair, the Tiguan R Line isn’t short on tech or safety. Highlights include:
- IQ.LIGHT LED Matrix headlamps
- 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system
- Ventilated massage seats
- 10.3-inch digital cockpit
- Nine airbags
- 21 ADAS functions
It’s still a solid German-engineered SUV with a refined drive and premium cabin. But in India, value perception matters and the market has spoken.
Our thoughts
If VW wants this SUV to succeed, it needs to rethink its CBU-only approach and maybe even consider a locally assembled variant. Until then, this discount might just be the lifeline the Tiguan R Line needs to stay relevant.
