BMW India has launched the updated BMW X5, reinforcing its position as one of the most capable luxury SUVs in the market. Produced at BMW’s Chennai facility, the new X5 comes with petrol and diesel engine options, both paired with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. Prices start at INR 1.02 crore (ex-showroom) for the xDrive30d diesel and INR 1.00 crore for the xDrive40i petrol, while the M Sport Pro variants sit higher at INR 1.15 crore and INR 1.13 crore respectively.

Design and Features

The updated X5 brings a refreshed exterior with sharper design details. The SUV now gets Matrix Adaptive LED headlights with blue accents, L-shaped LED tail lamps with BMW’s X motif, and standard 21-inch alloy wheels. The M Sport Pro trim further adds gloss black kidney grilles, sporty bumpers, red brake calipers, and a performance exhaust system. Inside, buyers get a 12.3-inch digital driver display paired with a 14.9-inch infotainment unit under a single curved glass panel. Comfort Seats with electric adjustment and lumbar support are now standard, along with a panoramic sunroof, Harman Kardon sound system, and four-zone climate control.

Powertrain Options

The xDrive40i petrol uses a 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbocharged motor producing 381 hp and 520 Nm, delivering 0–100 km/h in 5.4 seconds. The xDrive30d diesel makes 286 hp and 650 Nm, reaching 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds. Both engines feature a 48V mild-hybrid motor that adds 12 hp and 200 Nm for improved efficiency. The X5 also comes with Adaptive 2-Axle Air Suspension as standard, ensuring a balance between comfort and performance.

Off-road and Technology

A major highlight is the new xOffroad package offered as standard. It includes four driving modes – xSand, xRocks, xGravel and xSnow – along with reinforced underbody protection and an xOffroad camera. The BMW ConnectedDrive system integrates MyBMW app support, Digital Key Plus (smartphone as a key), Parking Assistant Pro, Reversing Assistant, and an Intelligent Personal Assistant. Safety features include multiple airbags, Dynamic Stability Control, ISOFIX mounts, and advanced driver assistance systems.

Competition

The BMW X5 rivals the Mercedes-Benz GLE, Audi Q7, and Volvo XC90 in India. With its mix of strong engines, tech-laden cabin, and enhanced off-road kit, BMW has positioned it as a more versatile luxury SUV.
